Seaton's Outdoor Gym
One of our Executive members first saw an outdoor gym installed at Brighton and thought it an excellent idea for Seaton. Seaton and Area Senior Council for Devon persisted that it should be considered further. We were involved at all stages from being part of the working party to being present on the day of the voting to answer questions from voters. Our Chairman Roger Trapani suggested to site the equipment in its location. Quoting from This is the Westcountry UK:
"A voting event was held by East Devon District Council and Seaton Town Council for people in Seaton to choose their new free to use outdoor gym for Seafield Gardens. The turnout was impressive, despite the rainy weather, with 187 people of all ages voting for which of the three options they preferred. The winner with 61% of all votes was option B, a design from Fresh Air Fitness which up to 21 people can use at once. The district council will now contact the company who submitted the successful design
and work with them to get the gym installed.
Cllr Stephanie Jones, said: "I want to say a very big thank you to everyone that took the time to come and vote. I'm really pleased that people in the town have had the opportunity to decide how the area will look."
FOLLOWING THE LAUNCH OF MAGIC MOMENTS MEMORY CAFÉ IN SEATON last May, a second Seaton and Area Magic Moments memory café was held on 24th June and was another great success attracting some new members.
Magic Moments Memory Café is for dementia sufferers and their carers.
A community psychiatric nurse will usually be in attendance, providing advice, support and informal counselling. Memory cafes provide carers with peer support and help dementia sufferers to be taken into the care system as early as possible. They offer a relaxing opportunity for people to meet, share experiences and gather information to help them and their families.
"It's marvellous to watch the memories of a dementia sufferer being triggered...and the benefits for a carer of even just a monthly café can last for some time".
Initially, the cafes will be held in Seaton town hall on a monthly basis, although the organizers hope to increase their frequency.
